We know that as dentists you’re all about helping people to feel happy and confident about their smile. That’s why it’s wonderful that today, people all around the globe will celebrate this most natural and uplifting indicators of human happiness with World Smile Day!
World Smile Day has been around since 1999 when it was inaugurated by the late American commercial artist, Harvey Ball. In 1963 Ball created the yellow ‘smiley face’ symbol that has become ubiquitous as a symbol of positivity – but over 50 years later and concerned that his artwork’s message was being diluted by overuse, he declared that the first Friday in October would be known as World Smile Day. On this day, he said, we should devote ourselves to positivity and acts of kindness aimed at making ourselves others smile.
A smile is a universally understood human expression. It knows no boundaries of language, geography or race – a simple smile can break down barriers, express joy, reassure and reinforce relationships.
Not only that, scientific research shows that smiling can actually cause happiness! When you physically smile, your brain recognizes the muscle activity and automatically releases happy hormones like serotonin and dopamine, which are shown to boost mood and increase feelings of happiness and wellbeing.
Sadly as a dentist, you’ll know all too well that many people feel self-conscious or embarrassed about their smile. Whether it’s as a result of misalignment or poor oral health, this often stops them from smiling even when they’ve got good reason to – which is a real shame because it means they’re missing out on some or all of those happy hormones.
