Home whitening dangers
With almost half of people in the UK admitting they’d like whiter or straighter teeth, it’s no surprise that many people turn to ‘at home’ treatments such as ultra convenient whitening strips to get a brighter smile on a budget. But recent research in the US has shown that hydrogen peroxide in the strips could be causing damage to teeth. In Europe, whitening products are legally prohibited from containing more than 0.1% peroxide – which means that to see results, they need to be used regularly. But new research at Stockton University in New Jersey has shown that hydrogen peroxide can cause fragmentation of the dentine inside teeth, making prolonged use inadvisable for oral health.
